One of the best things about using Alexa is that you have the possibility to teach it a whole range of skills.

So, whenever there is a gap in Alexa’s knowledge and compatibility, you can simply download a new skill that will fix it.

There are a team of developers dedicated to this exact task. It’s quite comforting, when you think about it. It gives the sense that if something isn’t working right now, it will be fixed in the near future.

That being said, there are often ways to get around these issues that work in the here and now. And that’s precisely what we are going to try make happen today.

How to Fix Smart Life Not Working with Alexa?

In the last few months, we have noticed that more and more of you are experiencing issues when connecting your Smart Life to your Alexa.

For the most part, all of these reports also state that they have actually downloaded the relevant skill which was designed to make this happen.

To help resolve the issue, we will be going through every fix that we know of to help you out. Though we can’t exactly guarantee success, we can at least improve your chances.

With a bit of luck, the developers may have even sorted this mess out by the time this is published. Regardless, let’s get stuck into our first suggested fix!

1. Give everything a reset

restart

As we always do, let’s kick this off with the simplest of our solutions first. That way, some of you may avoid having to go through any unnecessary steps.

One reason why issues such as these can crop up is a bug in the system somewhere. It isn’t all that common, but it does happen from time to time.

When faced with minor bugs, the easiest way to flush them out is to give everything involved a quick reset. This will only take a minute and could well do the job.

To begin with, let’s log out of the Smart Life App on whatever device you are using. Then, log out of your Alexa account too. Once you have logged out of both, give the device you are using a hard reboot.

All that remains then is to wait for it to boot up again, log into your accounts, and see has the issue gone away.

2. Clear out the data and cache files

Clear data

The next solution to this problem also relates to there being a bug somewhere that is hampering the performance of one or both apps.

This is why we are next going to clear out the data and cache of both – just to be sure. To get started, you will first have to go into the settings menu on your phone. Form the settings menu, you should then go into application settings.

Next up, you will need to hit on both apps. You will then be presented with the option to clear all the data of both apps at once.

Sure, you will need to set up everything again after you have done this, but if it works afterwards, we think it’s worth it.

3. Make sure you have the skill enabled

At this point, we have ruled out the likelihood of a bug on either app causing the problem. So, our best guess is that it is something to do with the skill you have added to Alexa.

Quite often, when people download these skills, they forget that you then need to go and enable them for them to begin working. So, go into the Alexa configuration tab and make sure that it is switched on.

The Last Word

Unfortunately, these are the only fixes we could find to resolve this problem. At the moment, it does seem like there are some issues that may relate to the skill itself and not to your particular set up and equipment.

If this does prove to be the case, we will just have to hope that they get it resolved before too long. Normally, the developers are on the ball with this kind of stuff, so we can’t imagine that it will continue much longer.

  1. Are there any alternatives to Smart Life? Things aren’t working like they used to. Can no longer add groups, for example. Certain things won’t work w Alexa. Terrible app!

  2. Unfortunately, something goofy has happened lately to several users. I have several smart sockets and everything seemed to work well for about a year or more. No problems, no issues. Suddenly, one of my sockets stopped working. I reinstalled it, replaced it and tried different things, but nothing seems to work. All the others are working fine. For some reason, the “Master Bedroom ON” command that used to work without any issues, won’t work anymore. And any command for that matter, that includes “master bedroom” just won’t work. I am not new at this stuff; I am hardly a techie, but know my way around these things pretty well. This has me frustrated and confused, but have just given up. I just control that light/socket directly from my SmartLife app, and just have to bypass Alexa altogether. What a b*t*h she can sometimes be.

    • I’ve had the same issue with the master bedroom command. It happened when I installed a Dyson fan then my Smart Life ceiling fan wouldn’t work with the command Master Bedroom Fan on but it works withMaster Bedroom Fan OFF. VERY FRUSTRATING

  3. I have many smartlife devices, some are controlled with Teckin sockets. They seem to need a firmware upgrade that NEVER works. Others are WiFi switches that work via smartie but then not via Alexa. Shows that this integration is basic at best and needs more work. Very disappointing. Having sign out and in or basically reinstall isn’t the user experience people are looking for.

  4. I am the same as Bob. My device used to work no problem then it just stopped. It works with my smart life app. Alexa recognises it sets it up says it is ready then nothing. Nothing no voice controls work and nothing works when using the alexa app.
    Frustrating to say the least.
