There’s no doubt about it, the Leviton Decora is a pretty special and unique smart home device.
For us, perhaps the strongest point of the Leviton brand is that they allow their users to effortlessly streamline the way in which they interact with their smart home appliances.
Though this process can be quite painstaking with other brands, it is really easy to get it up and running with Decora. Just set it up in unison with HomeKit and you’re ready to go.
Once there is a strong enough connection to the net, your Leviton Decora Smart Switch should then be ready to use within minutes.
But, we do realize that it doesn’t always work out as nicely as this.
Having trawled the boards and forums, we were surprised to see a relatively large number of complaints from people who just couldn’t seem to get it all to work no matter what they tried.
Of course, we understand that there are few things as annoying than forking out cash for devices such as this for it all to just end in disappointment.
So, with that in mind, we thought we would put together this little guide to help you get everything set up and working again. Below, we will tackle the most common issues experienced by Leviton Decora users.
Leviton Decora Smart Switch Troubleshooting
With smart devices getting ever more complex as time rolls on, the number of issues that can cop up also rises.
Luckily, with this particular unit, problems tend to be quite minor and relatively easy to fix from the comfort of your own home.
This speaks to the build quality of the device itself, with major hardware issues being relatively uncommon.
So, if you ae concerned that you might not be ‘techy’ enough to troubleshoot you Leviton Decora Smart Switch, don’t be.
None of these tips will have you taking anything apart or risking the integrity of you device in any way. With that, let’s get right into it.
1. What to do if the Lights are Flickering
One problem that came up more often than others was the one where the lights on your Leviton Decora Smart Switch seem to start flickering for no good reason at all.
Naturally, when lights start flashing on any device, it generally isn’t a good sign. In fact, with some devices, it can often mean the beginning of the end.
However, with the Leviton Decora Smart Switch, the news isn’t all that bad in most cases. Usually, when the lights stat flashing, all it means is that there may be a bad connection to the lamp.
So, to diagnose this, the first thing you need to do is to check the connection on the lamp to make sure that there isn’t anything obviously wrong with it.
Naturally, you should be looking for frayed or damaged wiring that can no longer work as well as it should.
In addition to this, you should also ensure that the wires ae firmly connected into the wire connectors of the Leviton Decora Smart Switch.
If you notice anything wrong, fix it straight away and then check to see if everything is working again. If it isn’t, it is time to move onto the next step.
2. What to do if the Light and Locator LED Won’t Turn On
For some of you, the issue you are trying to figure out is why your lights and locator LED don’t want to switch on, no matter what you do.
Unfortunately, there is no single cause for this, so getting to the bottom of it can be a little tricky. Regardless, this little trick seems to have a good success rate for fixing it.
The first thing you need to do is have a look at the circuit breaker. In quite a few cases, the whole cause of the problem will be that the breaker or a fuse may have given up.
If this doesn’t work, the next step is to check the lamp itself. The reason behind this is that the lamp itself may have burned out entirely.
Or, in other cases, the neutral wire may not have been wired into the switch. If you don’t know which wire that is, it is the white one.
If there hasn’t been any change after checking these few things, it could be that the power supply isn’t right. Before you continue, make sure that you are using a 120/277 V AC, 60 Hz source.
Otherwise, you are definitely going to have some problems.
3. What to do if the Remote Isn’t Working the Lights
The last issue that we can diagnose remotely is the one where your remote isn’t doing anything to control your lights. In this case, the first thing you should be doing is to check the length of the wire.
Essentially, you really need to make sure that the wire is shorter than 300ft in length. If that all checks out, you will need to check whether the wiring itself is damaged or not.
More often than not, a frayed or damaged wire will be the cause of the problem. While you are checking the wire, make sure that the green or bare copper wire in the wall box is attached to the green terminal screw.
If this checks out and you still aren’t getting the results you would expect, the only thing that remains is that the wiring in the remote may have been damaged.
However, at this point, we would recommend calling in for assistance.
The Last Word
Above are the three main issues that can cause your Leviton Decora Smart Switch to essentially become totally useless.
So, with a bit of luck, the problem was small enough that the above troubleshooting guide fixed the problem for you.
If not, we would suggest that you get in contact with customer support. Though major issues with the Leviton Decora Smart Switch are relatively rare, you may have been unlucky enough to acquire a faulty device.
