Even though it is one of the most popular smart locks now available on the market, the Kwikset Smart Lock still has the potential to have its fair share of issues and complexities.
These faults may vary from something as basic as an issue with the installation to something as major as a problem with the doorbell, which makes the lock far less effective than it otherwise might be.
Common Kwikset Smart Lock Problems Troubleshooting
In this post, we will discuss some of the most typical issues that arise with Kwikset Smart Locks, as well as the methods that may be used to rapidly remedy these issues.
- Won’t Unlock With The Appropriate Code
If you have tried all of the possible codes and it still won’t open, you probably forgot to do something very simple after entering the code, which is to hit the ‘Lock’ button after entering the code.
That’s very normal, particularly considering that you’re a new user of Kwikset.
Please keep in mind that if you input the incorrect code three times in a row, you will be locked out of the room for one minute.
You have the option of either adding a new user code or doing a factory reset on your device if you forget your code. You should try to avoid falling back on this option if at all feasible.
- Kwikset Smart Lock Not Responding
There are a few different things that you may do if your Kwikset Smart Lock is not responding to the instructions that you have given it.
- First, ensure that your mobile device, whether it’s a phone or a tablet, has Bluetooth enabled and is linked to the door lock. In the event that it does not pair with the lock, you will need to reset the connection.
- Proceed to your device’s settings menu (the location will vary depending on your operating system).
- Locate the Bluetooth feature and check to see if it is active. In addition to this, check to see if there are any other electronic gadgets in the area that might be disrupting your signal.
- If required, choose “Forget This Device,” and then start the pairing process again from the beginning.
- Fails To Connect To Smart Home Devices
There is possibly a problem with the smart lock’s pairing if you are unable to effectively link it to the smart home system in your house.
- First, you should check to see whether your smart home system is paired with any other smart locks, such as an older one you may have, and if it is, you should unpair it. After that, give your Kwikset another go at being connected.
- There is also a possibility that the problem is one of coverage, which often arises when the device was put first before being paired with the smart home system. To find a solution to this problem: While maintaining the battery’s position, detach the inside body of the lock from the mounting pad.
- After that, complete the pairing procedure in close proximity to the control panel of your smart home system. It’s possible that the controller has to do a vibe check with the newest member of the family before moving further.
- After one minute of inactivity on the smart lock’s part, you may check to see whether the pairing procedure was successful.
- Stops Working After Battery Replacement
In the event that your Kwikset Smart Lock is malfunctioning, a fully charged battery may be the problem.
If that’s the case, but your smart lock is still acting up, you may want to try taking the battery out and seeing if it helps.
If your Kwikset Smart Lock has a screw, it’s probably near the top of the latch. Before you can get your smart lock off, you’ll need to take off this section of the deadbolt.
After any extra screws have been removed, the two halves may be spread apart and laid on their sides, with the appropriate sides facing up or out, depending on how they were attached.
You may pull these two pieces apart with a flathead screwdriver if the four little clips keeping them together prove to be a challenge.
You can now see the power port on one side and the wire connecting everything on the other:
Separate both cables by carefully drawing them apart from each other until there are no connections left between pieces except those required for reassembly later on in this procedure.
- The Touchscreen Stops Working
It is possible that there is a problem with the activation if you have the touchscreen model but it does not load.
First, press down on the pad using the palm of your hand or the back of your hand until you can see the digits.
To read the numbers, touch the screen’s bottom left corner until they appear. Use at least three fingers to touch the screen and continue doing so until you see the digits.
The SecureScreen function is available on some models and restricts the display to illuminating only two numbers at any one moment.
This additional safety measure defends your home from intrusions that Kwikset refers to as “smudge” attempts.
If you have this function turned on, before the complete screen will show, you will be required to tap two arbitrary numbers.
After completing that step, you will be able to input the access code. If they do so, nobody will be able to recognize your code even if they risk looking at it.
- It Just Stops Working Altogether
If you’ve locked yourself out of your house and your Kwikset Smart Lock isn’t functioning, try these solutions.
Make sure the batteries are completely charged in your Kwikset Smart Lock before trying to open the door.
Verify that the door is closed: Every once in a while, we forget to switch off a light or other obstruction that might prohibit us from shutting a door before using the smart lock app or Siri/Alexa voice commands to unlock it.
This might also disrupt the lock’s ability to talk to other devices you’ve linked to it, such as a keypad or the lights and fans you use Siri/Alexa to operate.
Make sure you double-check this section as well!
Verify that no one else has access codes set up in their smartphone applications; someone else may be attempting to use them at the same time you are, rendering your app inoperable.
To conclude why something won’t work, though, we need to look at a few additional factors first.
- Having Trouble With A Non-Cooperative Latch
The act of ensuring that your lock latches properly in accordance with the direction in which your door swings is referred to as “handing” (right- or left-hand).
This is essential to ensure that the length of your electronic deadbolt may be adjusted appropriately.
- After all, you are looking for a reliable lock. To ensure that you are using the correct manner of handing, follow these steps:
- While you are inserting the battery pack, you should keep the programming button pressed and held down. Continue doing so until the latch bolt begins to move.
- During the time that it is familiarizing itself with the position of your door, the bolt will extend or retract on its own.
- After a little period of time, it will come to a halt, and the handing procedure will be over when the LED begins flashing green.
- Simply do the procedure over again if the red light does not turn green.
- Deadbolt Stops Working
The first thing you should do if the key won’t work to unlock the Kwikset deadbolt on your door is to make sure the battery is completely charged.
If it isn’t, you’ll need to get a new one and replace the old one.
To do this, find the battery compartment on your lock and remove the cover by twisting it in the opposite direction as the clock.
After that, take out any old batteries that may be present (unless there are none), and replace them with new ones.
Before shutting up shop once again by replacing the cover, check to see that the new batteries are oriented so that their positive sides are facing each other.
If this doesn’t work and you’re still having difficulties getting your Kwikset smart lock operate correctly, we may have uncovered another problem:
Twisted or broken connections between each portion of your pin-and-tumbler mechanism.
This might be the result of an impact caused by dropping or pounding the device into a hard surface, such as a concrete floor;
If this is the case, you should consider replacing those components as soon as possible before attempting to solve the issue.
- Buttons Stop Working Properly
If your Kwikset Smart Lock buttons aren’t functioning, try these steps:
- Connect a laptop or tablet to the same Wi-Fi network as your smart lock to test the connection.
- If you don’t have internet, hardwire your router and smart lock. This might solve your troubles. If Wi-Fi works, you won’t need this step.
- Now that everything is set up (and the charger and other parts are OK), call Kwikset customer support.
When I install the keypad deadbolt, everything works fine until the backplate is bolted securely. Once that is accomplished, the deadbolt is impossible to turn manually or with a key. It will work if i loosen the plate, but then the entire mechanism wiggles on the door. I bought the smartlocks for my office doors 14 yrs ago, installed them myself with no trouble. Within the last yr, a few batteries have corroded which break the motor. The newer locks are nearly impossible to install. Half of them have this problem. I called a locksmith and when I told him what was happening, he said its faulty engineering because that should never happen. What is rehanding? The deadbolt only moves in one direction, i fail to understand it. Im beyond frustrated at this point. Ty if you can shed some light on this situation
