Ambient Weather stations are not only affordable but bring a ton of utility features to the owners. The only complicated thing about these units is that you’ll have to install the sensors perfectly. Other than that, it is not that hard to secure consistent performance from Ambient Weather WS.

If you browse the community forums for a while, it will be clear that many users have been struggling to get the Rain Gauge working on Ambient Weather WS-2902. So, here are some fixes to help you when the Ambient Weather WS-2902 rain gauge is not working.

Ambient Weather WS-2902 Rain Gauge Not Working

  1. Check For Debris

The first thing you need to do in this situation is to check the funnel for stuck debris. The unit won’t trip unless the water droplets are going into the funnel, and you need to make sure that this funnel is clean every time it rains. There is no point in using a blocked funnel, and you should be cleaning the units every single month.

Other than that, there aren’t any other options, and if the funnel is indeed blocked, you need to clean it immediately. Hopefully, you won’t have to bother with more solutions, and the device will start responding to rain.

  1. Remove Obstructions Above The Unit

Sometimes, it is because the obstructions above the unit are blocking the rain droplets from tripping the sensors. So, if there is an overgrown branch or any other object blocking the view of the sky from the sensor, then the only logical thing left to do is to remove them permanently. Ideally, your sensor should have a clear view of the sky, and the rain gauge should be able to get a few droplets into the funnel when it starts to rain.

  1. Get New Batteries

The low battery status on your Ambient Weather station can also point toward the same problem. If the device is working perfectly and you’re sure that it is perfectly clean, then you need to source compatible batteries for your device. So, if you’ve had the unit for a while, there is no harm in spending a few extra bucks on battery replacement. You won’t have to bother with the same issue for months once the batteries are replaced in the Ambient Weather device.

  1. Check Orientation Of The Gauge

The rain gauge should be perfectly level with the ground to receive the droplets directly into the funnel. If you’ve not installed the gauge correctly, then the droplets will hit the side of the funnel and go towards a different spot. So, you need to make sure that the orientation of the gauge is correct and the angle of your device is level with the ground. That should be enough to get the sensors working without further complications.

  1. Find A Different Spot

At this point, you just have to find a different spot at the Ambient Weather station and then check the performance over the next couple of weeks. It shouldn’t be that difficult to get the desired response from the Ambient Weather station when the gauge is installed in a good spot. So, if you’re not getting any response from the unit even after going through all of the solutions mentioned above, then you need to find a better place for the unit.

Any spot with a clear view of the sky should be enough to help you with this situation, and all you need to focus on is to get the water droplets into the funnel. Other than that, it is not that difficult to get the Ambient Weather station rain gauge working.

  1. Prevent Droplet Accumulation

Lastly, in heavy rain, the droplets can accumulate over the funnel and restrict the further flow of the droplets towards the tripping mechanism. So, you need to spray the sides with a slippery coating so that the water doesn’t accumulate and the droplets keep hitting the tripping mechanism consistently.

You can also contact the official support regarding this issue, and they will help you narrow down the possible fixes for this situation. Hopefully, you won’t have to do anything more than clean up the debris, but if the gauge is defective, a replacement is the only solution left.

  1. Silicone spray.

However; my less than 30 days old WS2902D is not recording the correct rainfall amount. Comparing with my old style glass tube gauge, my WS 2902D is only recording 60% of what the tube recorded. Comparing my WS to other WS in the neighborhood, I am still showing a lot less rainfall than my neighbor. I have tried to connect with Ambient support to no avail. Call. Wait and wait and then get a voice message saying leave your name and number. I never get them to call me back or when I send emails I get no answers. What I have right now is a very expensive temperature gauge with a few other weather indicators. I am most concerned with recording railfall and not getting there.
